Each segment of a case interview is designed to assess specific skills, from problem-solving and analytical thinking to structured communication and creativity. Below, we will break down the typical flow of a consulting case interview, focusing on what to expect at each stage and how to prepare effectively. 

1. The Opening Question: Setting the Stage

The case interview begins with the interviewer presenting the problem statement (aka the prompt). This could be anything from estimating the market size for a new product to solving a strategic challenge for a client. The opening question is critical because it sets the context for the entire discussion.

Key tips for handling this stage:

  • Listen carefully to the prompt and take notes.
  • Clarify ambiguities by asking precise, relevant questions.
  • Restate the problem to confirm your understanding.

2. Structuring the Problem: Laying Out Your Approach

Once you’ve understood the problem, the next step is to outline your approach. This is where case interview frameworks come into play. Whether it’s the profitability framework, market entry framework, or a customized structure, this segment tests your ability to break down a complex problem into manageable parts.

What interviewers look for:

Your goal here is to demonstrate clear communication and structured thinking. A well-crafted framework can set the tone for the rest of the discussion.

3. The Quantitative Analysis: Diving Into the Numbers

You’ll be asked to interpret data, run calculations, and draw insights to address the problem. For example, you might need to evaluate market share data or analyze an investment breakeven.

Key skills to showcase:

  • Accuracy and speed in performing calculations.
  • Ability to interpret charts, graphs, or tables.
  • Drawing actionable insights from the data. For example:
    • If you calculate market size, also explain how the result impacts the feasibility of a market entry strategy.
    • If you determine a profit margin, also discuss whether it aligns with industry benchmarks and client goals.
